What is a Virtual Private Network (VPN)?

A virtual private network (VPN) is a protected network connection on a publicly accessible infrastructure. A VPN endpoint is the point at which a VPN tunnel begins or ends. The VPN is established between the VPN endpoints.

Access to the internal network and its resources should only be possible via a VPN tunnel to prevent unauthorized reading or manipulation of information. Even when using infrastructure in the cloud, a VPN should be considered to secure the transport of information.

The transmission of data is encrypted within the VPN. However, depending on the VPN protocol used, the encryption methods and thus the security may differ. Secure protocols currently use the proven AES-256 encryption.
