What is Mobile Device Management?

Mobile device management (MDM) enables the central administration of devices such as smartphones and laptops. The goal of an MDM is, among other things, to secure the devices and the data on them.

A mobile device management should be implemented to centrally control and manage software and hardware solutions, security settings and password policies. In addition, MDMs offer functions such as remote wiping, which can be used to wipe entire devices if they are lost.

An MDM should only be implemented on work devices. If private devices may be used for business purposes, a container solution should be implemented instead. The difference between an MDM and a container solution can be found here.
